But people in France hate when a French shows a bit of arrogance, France is one of the rare country on earth where you legit aren't allowed to be confident

There’s a solid chance that this quote is a translation from french to english, so it’s very well possible that he had a more humble tone and it just comes off differently, but who knows
562
u/kaprrisch Cavaliers Oct 04 '22
It’s also possible that he sounds even MORE confident in French and this is a soft translation.

It is but the way it said matter ,I speak french among others and he was really confident but i don't think it's arrogance per se , he said a few months before that he was trying to get in NBA mentality "always believe that you are the best" that probably the reason

Mostly because of intonation, I remember on r/soccer a lot of Benzema interview when directly translated looked far more cocky than when you understand the language it's just the way it was said

I think arrogant is not wrong. They definitely think they're better than a lot of their neighboring countries and look down on the rest of the world as uncultured and unrefined.

I’m french and it’s actually the opposite. A lot of people here hates confidence. If you’re really good at something don’t say it because If you do you instantly become an arrogant prick for most. For example a Tim Duncan type of guy would be way more appreciated than a Kobe type of guy. We say confident players like Kobe and MJ have that American Mentality

It's also possible that he said it in English with a French accent and made him sound sexier.

Tbf to him he probably knows his physical potential. He could do nothing but miss this year and still probably get drafted in the lottery purely on potential. There aren't a load of 7"4 guys on the planet and ones that move like him are one of a kind
375
u/Gamesgtd Magic Oct 03 '22
Not many 7’4 guys who can hit movement 3s off the dribble so you may be on to something.

u/AmusingAnecdote Warriors Oct 03 '22
Not many 7’4 guys who can hit movement 3s
You got a source on that?
92
u/2KareDogs Bulls Oct 03 '22
There’s a lot of us
93
u/AmusingAnecdote Warriors Oct 04 '22
I guess so. I'm 7'8" and can shoot off the dribble or off movement, so I don't count.
12
24
u/Gamesgtd Magic Oct 03 '22
Listen to the real GM radio podcast with Danny Leroux who recently went to one of Victor's games in France and talked about how during his workouts Vic was working on shooting 3s off the dribble before the game. Not saying it's something he will do immediately but it's clearly something he is working on to be a part of his repertoire in the future.

u/AmusingAnecdote Warriors Oct 04 '22
The joke was that there are obviously not that many 7'4"movement shooters because there are almost no humans that are 7'4" at all. Obviously Wemby has a unique skillet for his size.

u/Mosh00Rider Suns Oct 03 '22
Do you think someone did a well researched article on how many 7'4 guys can hit movement 3s?
How many 7'4 guys do we have in the NBA currently and how many of them can hit a movement 3, there is your answer.
25
u/Ai2Foom Wizards Oct 04 '22
Porzingus is basically only one
11
u/AmusingAnecdote Warriors Oct 04 '22
Also it's obviously a joke. There's probably only a dozen or two 7'4" human beings, full stop. It doesn't need a source, that's why it's funny.

u/Mosh00Rider Suns Oct 04 '22

Poka and Chet. Might as well get wemby too.
38
u/chantlernz Cavaliers Oct 04 '22
Then trade for Porzingis and Bol Bol:
PG: Aleksej Pokusevski (7')
SG: Bol Bol (7'2")
SF: Kristaps Porzingis (7'3")
PF: Victor Wembanyama (7'4")
C: Chet Holmgren (7'1")

Do you believe Wembanyama would be a good fit on the Thunder (not saying he is or isn't a good fit)? Just wondering how you think Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren would fit together.
→ More replies3
u/musicantz Rockets Oct 04 '22
Pushing Chet to PF might be good for him long term. It’s a less physical position and he can stay healthier longer. All of them can shoot so it’s not like the lane is going to be super clogged.
I feel bad for the team chef. They’re all going to need to be force fed for years to be normal weights for their positions.

Correction: There aren’t any that can
Wemby reminds me of Ralph Sampson with a modernized skillset. If you look into Ralph, he was supposed to be the next generational big and he was one of the best college players ever

u/vishjay101 Oct 03 '22 edited Oct 04 '22
If Wembanyama is truly the second coming of Ralph Sampson, then he will become a Rocket just like Ralph Sampson did, plus the Rockets have had quite a bit of success with drafting centers and drafting 7-foot bigs #1 overall, such as Hakeem Olajuwon, Ralph Sampson, and Yao Ming, so he would excel in Houston if it were to occur.

Depends who he gets drafted by and whether they have someone who can deal with the heavier guys who try and go at him, even then when he gets knocked off his spot he's pretty good at using his length to get a lil tap block and not always bang against guys
2
u/Overall-Palpitation6 Oct 04 '22
Serious question, who was the last big man or NBA player who got injured or wasn't playable from getting "pushed around" by bigger bodies. It's always spoken about with skinny prospects, but never really eventuates.

I mean, you'd literally just be betting on Victor getting injured. Even in a world where Victor ends up with a 0th percentile offensive outcome, just his defense+lob threat ability would make him an All-Star.
