Do you even get penalized for that? Having too many on sure, but too many off the floor?

263

u/onamonapizza Spurs Oct 06 '22

I know you jest, but it's literally the first part of Rule No. 3 in the NBA rulebook:

Each team shall consist of five players. A player is disqualified from the game when he receives his sixth personal foul. No team may be reduced to less than five players.

https://official.nba.com/rule-no-3-players-substitutes-and-coaches/

If a team refused to send out five players, they would probably be forced to forfeit...which I guess is an interesting way to tank games.

I imagine if they forfeit without good cause there’s a mockery of the game and best interest of basketball clause somewhere that allow the commish to fine them into oblivion.

17

u/ThatHotAsian Timberwolves Oct 06 '22

Yeah a team forfeiting games from refusing to send out 5 players multiple times over a season is not even going to ever live to see their lottery pick lol. The whole team choosing not to play like the Bucks did after the shooting in Kenosha is fine as a one off but outright not playing for draft position is gonna incur the wrath of Adam Silver and NBA owners.

With all this "Generational talent that we haven't seen in a #1 since LeBron" talk I'm not sure there's a team that would be able to make a trade.

524

u/FullHouse222 Knicks Oct 05 '22

Wasn't Zion the "Generational talent that we haven't seen in a #1 since LeBron"?

Or was that Wiggins?

Or Greg Oden?

Hell I don't even know anymore.

236

u/vonkillbot Warriors Oct 05 '22

I'm not sure on Wiggins, Zion was clouted that way. In any respect, that's how this works, isn't it? Zion's hype eclipsed Wiggins. Wembanyama is apparently eclipsing Zion. And the following year if some kid's hype eclipses Wembanyama's but not LeBron's, then that again will be "Generational talent that we haven't seen in a #1 since Lebron".

158

u/TheOkComputerGuy Grizzlies Oct 06 '22

To be fair he is like a young, taller, more aggressive Durant. Mans 18 years old playing like this. He'd likely do the same in the NBA. That performance was a wake up call for anyone who is thinking of passing up this opportunity. He's legit.

The Lakers get the first pick, only for it to go to the New Orleans Pelicans. The NBA then has to deal with possibly the most switchable team the NBA has ever seen:

PG: Dyson Daniels (6'6 with a 6'11 wingspan)

SG: Brandon Ingram (6'9 with a 7'3 wingspan)

SF: Herb Jones (6'8 with a 7' wingspan)

PF: Zion Williamson (6'6 with a 6'10 wingspan, and is Zion)

C: Victor Wembanyama (7'4 with an 8' wingspan)

17

u/indoninjah 76ers Oct 06 '22

Their success is entirely dependent on the quality of the eastern conference. Conference is weak, they might sneak into the playoffs. Conference is strong and they’re getting a top 5 pick

They were becoming legit until Wall got injured. They've been a weird spot ever since with Beal improving and trying to build around him

11

even with wall, they capped themselves into mediocrity with bad contracts.

why did they sign our backup center for 4yrs, 64m...or maxed otto porter

7

u/BlueHundred Knicks Oct 06 '22

Even with bad contracts, they were trending up imo. Wall was in his prime and Beal and Otto were still improving. They could have been a top team in the East with Beal becoming an elite 25 to 30 point scorers. They won 49 games in Wall's last healthy season.

On the other hand, they do nothing about the Knicks outright disaster for 20 years straight lol.

I'm just going to auto-correct you right now. We never tanked on purpose in the past 20 years, We were just mediocre to bad, until the RJ year when the rules got changed because of your team. Did Stern have to step in in the late 2000's with donny walsh to get dolan in line yes, because our owner spent money, he was just dumb as rocks and over meddled in basketball affairs. He spent it on the wrong players and the wrong front office personal. Christ I can't believe you got me defending james fucking dolan.

This is a piece of the puzzle I feel like isn't being talked about enough. The league last year was pretty good, and we have two teams (Nuggets/Clippers) being potential title contenders when healthy and getting better. Then you have tanking teams doing garage sales of their talent, so the Hawks/Cavs/Timberwolves are all looking better than last year.

We're shaping up for one of the most stacked playoffs in recent memory combined with one of the worst set of bad teams in recent memory.

The NBA has to import a system where once you’re eliminated from the playoffs … losses count as wins, and wins count as losses

Would make games really fun down the stretch

u/SnooPears2369 San Diego Clippers Oct 05 '22

I like the creativity, but I don't see how players would be incentivized to play hard just so teams can draft their replacements

u/Brad-Stevens Celtics Oct 05 '22

The players always play hard

The teams wouldn’t rest the stars for a month in this case

u/DarkSoulsDarius Lakers Oct 05 '22

I think "the players always play hard" is more true for the NFL than the NBA. There are definitely players that coast to get pay days and also why we have contract year players.

u/LaserBeamsCattleProd 76ers Oct 05 '22

I think part of it is NBA is easy to play hard, but the work is done during the off season, dudes who are on cruise control will barely do any work during the off season. When the season starts, they're out of shape, not getting minutes or will get hurt for being out of shape. But they can go through the motions on the court

NFL is less about having insane cardio and more about resting, and not showing up to camp overweight or in a hot air balloon. NFL playing hard means putting your body at extreme risk, and I think dudes who are paid and checked out are not willing to do that.

u/DarkSoulsDarius Lakers Oct 05 '22

I think NFL players there's a very bigger risk of being cut and being out of the league, whereas nba players are often more safe and definitely get rich much quicker and thus can check out quicker.

With the flattened odds, I just don't see it. If you are one of the bottom three or even five your odds are very similar to wind up with a top 2 pick.

u/RulersBack Lakers Oct 05 '22

Think the race to the bottom he's referring to is the middling teams trying to get into that 3-5 range. The play-in matchups might be disgusting this year lmao

If we decide to tank, I fully expect the Hornets the tank the process of tanking itself.

Like, we’d for some reason decide to still play Plumlee instead of Mark Williams. And sit guys like Kai, Bouknight, etc. another year. I don’t even trust us to flip Gordon Hayward and Terry for anything of future value, I mean, you saw what we did with Jalen Duren on draft night. I kind of want to tank but I don’t even trust the organization to do that right 😭

It's understandable why, but there is going to be a lot of heartbreak for the majority of teams that tank and don't secure a top 2 much less top 5 pick.

It's not fun to watch your team tank an entire year's worth of games on purpose and it's even worse if they barely get anything to show for it.

Best case scenario for my team is that the Rockets develop our young guys but just naturally suck enough to lose semi-competitive games for at least the first 3/4 of the season. In the last 15 games or so if we are within striking distance of one of those coveted 14% lottery slots, then fuck it go for broke.

Instead of forcing all these teams to act like they have injured guys they are sitting the NBA should just create a new designation. Instead of DNPs they should allow WNPs. Instead of "DNP - Injured" they should just be honest and say "Will Not Play - Wembanyama".
