Did this happen today? I watched live and missed this

113

u/tjm5575 Penn State Jul 04 '22

Also wondering this.

247

u/FishyFry84 Jul 04 '22

It did, but the director left it on the other guy so the protestor wouldn't get the attention he wanted.

49

u/tjm5575 Penn State Jul 04 '22

Figured it was cut out somehow

66

u/thatguy9012 Jul 04 '22

Usually there is a few seconds of delay on live broadcasts just incase something like this happens

28

Yeah I saw this live. Was kinda crazy

Intent isn’t the right word. You’re describing justification. In my state, to provide one example, justification defenses include self-defense, defense of habitation, and defense of your property and family’s property.

What they are asking for is the opportunity to present inadmissible evidence to get the jury to acquit them of a crime they admit to - nullification.

We can discuss whether a prosecutor should exercise his/her discretion to dismiss, or the steps a judge could take to show leniency upon conviction, but that’s not a jury question. For that matter, the video could potentially be admissible in the sentencing phase even if it weren’t admissible during the guilt/innocence phase.

2

u/Reniconix Jul 05 '22

My first guess would be that the video itself was attained unlawfully (in the act of trespassing) which makes it inadmissible.

u/simeon_pantelonas Jul 04 '22

Regardless of how one falls on this one of the biggest problems in our judicial system is how often potential exculpatory evidence gets withheld by the prosecution because they deem it irrelevant or by a judge who rules it inadmissible.

Expose Battlefield Death Star?

184

u/Derpman2099 Jul 05 '22

according to some articles it says "Expose Smithfields Death Star" and that since it was at a hotdog eating contest that its most likely in protest of Smithfield Foods, a pork producer in virginia

179

u/InuitOverIt Jul 05 '22

You get one shot at the big time here and that's the phrase you pick for your sign? Doesn't make sense to anybody who doesn't already know about it.

42

u/OizAfreeELF Jul 05 '22

Lol seriously. Honestly, in spite of their cause being just most of these protester types are incompetent douches

19

u/Cjc6547 Jul 05 '22

I mean yeah, did you hear about the protesters at the formula one race this Sunday? They decided to sit in the middle of the track on the opening lap. Only reason they didn’t get smacked was because of a crash in the first turn.

7

u/Dreadsbo Kansas City Chiefs Jul 04 '22

Same. I’m curious now

24

u/QuincyThePigBoy Jul 04 '22

The gist I’ve gotten from the comments is that the pig farms in the doc are horrifying. I’ve seen them in the past and it’s awful. I definitely want to see the doc. People are saying this was a pointless protest but how many of us are now learning that Nathan’s is a horrible company. They’re horrible to their employees, too, I guess.

5

u/GorillaScrotum Jul 04 '22

I can’t find any info on this documentary or whatever and it seems like the comments were purged, do you know what the documentary was called?

8

u/Wrong_Hombre Jul 04 '22

Sorry but aren't Nathan's dogs all beef and Kosher? Why would he be protesting hog farms?

-6

u/QuincyThePigBoy Jul 04 '22

This is Smithfield farms. They own Nathan’s. Because Smithfield treats their animals like shit. Also, kosher means literally nothing other than that the food conforms to Jewish standards.

20

u/Wrong_Hombre Jul 04 '22

I mean, it means no pigs.

-1

u/QuincyThePigBoy Jul 04 '22

Oh yeah, I thought you were implying it meant something about quality. Like I said, this is Smithfield farms. The cows are treated no different. It’s factory farming and should be illega but instead, it’s illegal to film inside the farms.

2

u/_floydian_slip Jul 05 '22

"means literally nothing except for exactly what it means"

2

u/QuincyThePigBoy Jul 05 '22

In relation to factory farming, it’s irrelevant. This video is from the same farm that produces the animals for Nathans.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '22

Did you find whatever he’s talking about? They’re deleting all the comments

6

u/QuincyThePigBoy Jul 05 '22

Haha seriously? Reddit is censoring now? Yeah, it wasn’t great but his message is valid. What was sent to me was short. Just watch something about factory farming. Smithfield farms are atrocious and that’s where Nathan’s come from. Concentration camps x1000 for animals. Not one moment of the animals life is positive. Sad shit. I don’t remember the name of the video just to be clear.

-1

u/danstansrevolution Oakland Athletics Jul 05 '22

this isn't exactly just a protest though. you can't just show up to random places, unexpectedly, on national TV, and expect to think it will go any differently. he knew this would be the result going into this.

no one on the stage knows who this guy is, he could be a complete loony with a weapon, all that everyone knows is that he's definitely not supposed to be up there.

This is the equivalent to jumping on stage at a concert, or at the political rally. some kind of martyrdom protest.

2

u/clamshellconundrum Jul 05 '22

And that deserves the death penalty? Being a little surprising?

0

u/danstansrevolution Oakland Athletics Jul 05 '22

the dude knew he would be tackled at best, surely he didn't die. stop being dense.

btw the world stops working if shit like this becomes the norm, you can't advocate for this kind of disruptive behavior, no matter the purpose.

and before you respond with your idiot brain again, no I am not advocating for people to die. fuck off

143

u/Teddy_Icewater Jul 04 '22

Well, you, I, and half of reddit now know about Smithfield so I'd say he got pretty good value for his protesting buck.

4

u/YouCanCallMeVanZant Jul 05 '22

2

u/JCForrestor Jul 05 '22

You can still have meat AND more ethical conditions

1

u/dont_you_love_me Jul 05 '22

There is nothing more ethical than taking the life of an animal. They don’t know that they ever suffered at all once you end their life.

3

u/JCForrestor Jul 05 '22

Yeah, I don't care. We should still give them a better life and living conditions before we kill them. This argument against it is still dumb. We all die and forget how we live, yet we still strive for good living conditions. How about you go live out in a cramped cage stuffed with other humans. I mean by your logic it would be fine, right? You won't remember it! LMFAO

I thought the same thing. It looked like just some nerd wanting his 5 seconds of fame and I ended up googling what the sign meant but honestly most people won't even bother googling it

28

u/raktoe Jul 04 '22

You’d be very surprised. The question being asked means they’ve accomplished what they wanted. They piqued people’s interest in their cause. I see this mindset a lot on Reddit, people always wondering how advertising works, since it doesn’t work on them. The reality is, it does. Awareness of a product/ cause is a major hurdle. Maybe you’re not interested in their cause, but other people will be. I’m not from the states, I don’t recognize this brand, but I will be checking to see if it owns any Canadian subsidiaries, and researching the animal cruelty claims to see if I’ll be switching hot dog providers going forward.

-1

u/newbill Jul 04 '22

Spoiler alert, you’re not going to find any “humane” meat. 100% of the animals were born and bred to die.

20

u/AcreaRising4 Jul 04 '22

That is not what people mean when they say animals are inhumanly butchered lol

17

u/raktoe Jul 04 '22

But there are companies that treat the animals humanely while they’re alive. If I have the information necessary to choose those ones at the grocery store, I will every time.

Whats funny is though…i actually don’t care to look it up because of this clown ass protest by this “im the main character” ass hat. So ironically he made me not want to check what he was protesting about because of how he went about it.

11

u/tallg8tor Florida Jul 04 '22

That is true for many of us. However, neither you nor I are the main character. You were not going to look into Smithfield Deathstar or whatever the sign said before they pulled this stunt, either. However, many now will look it up after seeing it live or seeing the video.

-25

u/Darthgangsta Jul 04 '22

I actually think it does the opposite and makes others turned off to what you were protesting.

12

u/tallg8tor Florida Jul 04 '22

It definitely does receive some backlash. However, if no one is aware of what you were protesting, then bad publicity is better than no publicity. It's not like people are suddenly going to start donating money to Smithfield to torture more animals or whatever it is they're protesting.

-21

u/Darthgangsta Jul 04 '22

If the protest was done differently I may have a different tune. Human nature is to react annoyed and ignore it because of the ass hat protest they pulled.

If it was done differently, I may have actually cared.

It’s not really about protesting, it about himself, he wants to feel he did something, he wants to think he is important. This is why protesting now days has lost its purpose, it’s no longer about the cause, it’s all about the selfish need for one’sown delusional mind.

Competition? Yep. Physical excess? Yep. Training and technique? Yep.

Seems like a sport to me. Most humans couldn't qualify for this event, let alone challenge. How different is it really to most olympic sports? You can't just jump in a pool and be a champion swimmer, and you can't just cook up a batch of hotdogs and be a champion eater....

-26

u/1PMagain Jul 04 '22

“Sports”

27

u/Manwar7 Jul 04 '22

“an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.”

Fits the definition to a T, what are you on about

-33

u/freddy_guy Jul 04 '22

Fits "the" definition, as if there's one definition. FFS. Here's another one:

"an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature"

Which this does NOT meet, because of the "athletic" part. There's nothing athletic about eating.

11

u/jbokwxguy Jul 04 '22

So you go see how many hot dogs you can chug down in 10 minutes. I’ll top you out at 4 because I doubt you have the muscles to get down the food that fast.

17

u/lethe25 Jul 04 '22

I mean there is a lot of training and conditioning your body involved in competitive eating.

10

u/Knightmare25 Jul 04 '22

9

u/Manwar7 Jul 04 '22

I would disagree because it’s not just eating, it’s exerting your body to the extreme to eat massive amounts of food in a short amount of time. That takes physical training and effort
